About the Project

Niramayam, meaning “free from disease,” is Karra Society for Rural Action’s flagship initiative addressing the critical intersections of health, nutrition, and well-being among marginalized tribal communities in Jharkhand. The program adopts a holistic approach that integrates nutrition, early childhood care, SRHR, menstrual hygiene, and mental wellness, especially for women, adolescents, and children.

Through community ownership, indigenous knowledge, and convergence with state programs, Niramayam empowers people to reclaim their health rights and live with dignity.

Objectives

  • Reduce malnutrition and anaemia in children and women.

  • Promote nutrition security through traditional food systems and kitchen gardens.

  • Strengthen early childhood care and stimulation through rural crèches.

  • Empower adolescents and women through WASH, SRHR and menstrual health education.

  • Promote mental health awareness, peer support systems, and wellness practices.

  • Build community-based monitoring of health and nutrition entitlements.

  • Foster convergence with ICDS, NRHM, Poshan Abhiyan, and adolescent health programs.

Our Key Skill Development Areas

We empower tribal communities—particularly women, youth, and frontline workers—through:

  • Nutrition Literacy & Kitchen Gardening: Skills in cultivating diverse, seasonal, and iron-rich foods using traditional methods.

  • Crèche Management: Training local women (Sakhis) in early care, cognitive stimulation, and nutrition for children under 3.

  • SRHR Education: Life skills training for adolescents and women on bodily autonomy, reproductive health, contraceptive choices, early marriage prevention, and safe motherhood.

  • Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM): Sessions with adolescent girls and women on menstrual taboos, hygiene, and access to sustainable menstrual products.

  • Mental Health & Wellness: Capacity-building on emotional resilience, managing stress, anxiety, grief, and promoting self-care, especially among caregivers and adolescent girls.

  • Health Rights & Community Monitoring: Training VHSNCs, SHGs, and youth groups to demand timely access to rations, health services, and schemes.

🧩 How Sambal Works

  • Niramayam operates through a community-led and rights-based framework:

  • Assessment & Identification
Baseline surveys and adolescent profiling to identify health risks, malnutrition, and mental health indicators.

  • Integrated Interventions

  • 20 Rural Crèches across Lapung serve 350+ children under 3 with nutrition and stimulation.

  • Poshan Bagichas (Nutrition Gardens) promote dietary diversity and food sovereignty.

  • SRHR & MHM Sessions are held with adolescent girls, youth groups, and SHGs.

  • Poshan Bhoj events reinforce local dietary practices through community feasts.

  • Wellness Circles and one-on-one support sessions focus on anxiety, stress, and grief among young girls, mothers, and caregivers.

Impact So Far
2024-2025

  • 350+ children benefitting from rural crèches; 90+ undernourished children improved significantly.

  • 120+ tribal women trained in nutrition gardening; 100+ household gardens operational.

  • 240+ adolescent girls trained in SRHR, body literacy, menstrual hygiene, and life skills.

  • 70+ women and girls now use cloth pads and sustainable menstrual products.

  • 25+ mental health sessions held in peer support format; wellness circles introduced in all crèche clusters.

  • SHG women collectives conducting Poshan Bhoj and menstrual health drives on their own.
