About KSRA
Karra Society for Rural Action (KSRA) is a community-based organization founded in 1985. We are rooted in the tribal heartland of Jharkhand. Established with the vision of empowering rural communities, KSRA works to blend traditional knowledge with modern opportunities, creating sustainable pathways for livelihoods, equality, and resilience.
Our work focuses on:
-
Livelihood & Skill Development – Training rural artisans and youth in bamboo crafts, leaf plate making, jute bags, toy making, mobile repair, solar electrification, and computer education, while building strong market linkages.
-
Agriculture & Environment – Promoting lac and tasar cultivation, climate-resilient farming, forest conservation, and biodiversity protection for sustainable ecosystem services.
-
Gender Equality & Social Justice – Strengthening women’s voices through education, menstrual hygiene awareness, WASH programs, and opportunities to become self-reliant leaders.
-
Child Protection & Education – Preventing child marriage, child trafficking, and child labor through community action, rescue interventions, and rural crèches that improve early childhood nutrition and learning.
-
Governance & Rights – Empowering Gram Sabhas and Panchayats to safeguard entitlements, strengthen forest rights, and ensure inclusive decision-making.
KSRA’s initiatives are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Gender Equality, Climate Action, and Life on Land.
At its core, KSRA is committed to building a just, inclusive, and sustainable future where rural communities—especially women and youth—lead the way toward transformation.

The Founder
Syed Afzal Ahmed
Prof. Syed Afzal Ahmed began his remarkable journey in social work from Karra, a block in the Khunti district of Jharkhand. Despite the turbulent times marked by Naxal insurgency, he remained steadfast in his commitment to uplift the tribal communities of the region. He dedicated his life to working on critical issues such as health, women's rights, watershed management, and sustainable livelihoods.
A mentor to many budding social workers in Jharkhand, Prof. Ahmed also served as a professor at the Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS), Ranchi, where he inspired and guided the next generation of changemakers.
Among his many contributions, he was a pioneer in introducing the concept of microfinance in Jharkhand, enabling self-reliance among rural communities. He also played a pivotal role in collaborating with the state government to initiate an on-call rural ambulance service for pregnant women—a model that brought life-saving care to remote villages.
Prof. Ahmed passed away in 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy continues to guide and inspire those working for a just and equitable society.
"Though time will bring new faces and old ones may fade, the vision Dr. Ahmed set in motion is timeless. Like a seed planted in fertile soil, it will grow into something enduring, offering strength and shelter to all who seek it—nourishing communities for generations to come."
